let me ask a question ...

Posted by arctic_twilight on 2005.07.05 at 13:33
I don't have regular internet access because I'm in the middle of a cross-country move right now, and I am reliant upon free wifi hotspots.

But ... there doesn't seem to be much interest in this. I'll give it a week or so, but I'm tempted to tear the blog down and consider it a failure. Interesting conundrum ... a bunch of writers not interested in another writing medium.

So ... the question is: any objections?

shutting down the blog?

Hi, Andrea,
I think the biggest problem was that the information didn't get out to all the workshop participants. The other issue is that many of those attending have probably had limited experience with blogs (I, for one). I still think it's a wonderful idea, but perhaps it needs more time and more publicity on the part of the ISWF staff. If they include the URL on all their materials and announce it at the opening and closing sessions, and at the Elevenses, then I think it stands a good chance. But that kind of "push" isn't for us to decide. (My other thought is that the staff may have a concern that someone with an axe to grind might use this as a forum to bash a particular instructor.) All that said, if you decide to shut it down, I will understand. At least I've gotten into this realm just a bit, and while I am not a dedicated blogger, I can say I have my toenail in the door. :)

The only problem I have with the blog is that in my browser (IE6) the font is so tiny as to be almost unreadable. I can however read it in Opera. I don't know if anyone else is having that problem. Were there any other templates available? The white text on brown back is hard to read even in Opera. If this blogging host offers other templates, I would seriously consider something universally accessible like black font on white back. Just a thought...

Patience!

"But ... there doesn't seem to be much interest in this"

Gee, you just started this yesterday--aren't you being a bit hasty? You need to give it time to catch on.

My only problem with the blog is the user interface. In IE6 the font is so small as to be unreadabe. I don't know if anyone else is having that problem. In Opera I can read it better, but still the white font on brown back is not the most accessible choice. Were there other templates to chose from? The best and easiest combination to read is black text on white background.

But if the templates here are cumbersome, you may want to try http://www.blogger.com/home It gives you dozens of very user-friendly templates to chose from. I just started one for our recent class. See

Good luck!

I think the blog was not promoted enough - at Elevenses, in particular. During my week (Jun 26 - Jul 1), only one mention and a barely legible entry on the white board that disappeared by the next day. And, blogs seem to be a foreign concept to many. I overheard lots of confused queries at the one Elevenses where this was mentioned. The week after the 4th of July, there are no classes. Classes resume on Jul 10. Maybe there will be more interest then.

promotion

I agree promotion is the key. At one of the Elevenses Kurt (Hope the name is right!) was reluctant to read it out loud again because he had to keep repeating it, and the markers for the board were crummy...

I think getting it in the orientation packet would be a great idea if possible.
